Mense praat graag oor die ou dae. Ons almal kan onthou hoe gereeld ons oumas en oupas vir ons vertel het van die stampe en stote van hul kinderjare. Hoe anders die wêreld was.

Anders was swaarkry. Anders was opoffer. Maar anders was ook onwrikbaar en vol hoop.

Die oumense se wêreldbeskouing is in hulle ingeprent deur hul ouers, wie die bitter werklikheid van swaarkry al te goed geken het. Mense gebore tydens of kort na die verpletterende einde van die Boereoorlog. Die dae toe prente van verskroeide plase, die helkampe en uitgeteerde Bittereinders nog vars in die gedagtes van wit en swart, Boer en Brit was.

Tye was baie swaar. Gedurende die jare 30’s was almal brandarm. Afrikaners was tweederangse burgers, oumans het op voorstoepe gesit en hoes want die myne het hul tol geëis, kinders was kaalvoet omdat daar nie geld vir skoene was nie en ma’s moes vindingryke maniere vind om met die mees basiese bestanddele kos op die tafel te sit.

Afrikaans was maar nog ‘n groentjie en steeds deur die elite beskou as ‘n arm kombuistaal, hoewel onlangs verhef tot ‘n amptelike taal. Met sy rug teen die muur moes die Afrikaner drome van ‘n beter toekoms koester en dit met sy eie hande uit die bodem van Afrika uitkerf, kort op die hakke van ‘n Wêreldoorlog, ‘n wêreldwye pandemie en die Groot Depressie.

Mens kan verstaan waarom die oumense peinsend in die verlede instaar wanneer hulle die uitdagings van vervloë dae herkou. Tye was gewis baie swaar.

Teen hierdie agtergrond het ‘n Karookind die byna onversoenbare begrippe van opstand en getrouheid meesterlik verwoord in sy prosabundel Lojale Verset.

Hiermee daag Louw elke generasie uit om die wêreld om hom nugter te ontleed en dit te sien vir wat dit is. Daar sal altyd onreg en onderdrukking wees. Dit is ‘n gegewe feit. Die mate van onderdrukking hang egter af van die volk se gewilligheid om dit te aanvaar en sy bereidwilligheid om daarteen in opstand te kom.

Sy uitdaging kom ook met ‘n waarskuwing van gevaar. Wanneer die owerheid blatant en tot die been korrup is en die burgery nie in opstand kom nie, verdien die volk die uitbuiting wat volg.

Wanneer die owerheid ‘n volk se taal en kultuur vertrap en die burgery nie in opstand kom nie, verdien die volk die verswelging waaronder hy gebuk sal staan.

Wanneer die owerheid ‘n volk se grond wil onteien en die burgery nie in opstand kom nie, verdien die volk die hongersnood en ellende wat daaruit sal spruit.

Die Afrikaner is tans in ‘n stryd met homself geworstel. Soos ‘n rivier wat stry teen die aarde om ‘n weg na die see te vind. Ons weet dat die wêreld om ons deurdrenk is met korrupsie, ongeregtigheid en magsmisbruik. Links of regs – almal weet dat die owerheid die skurk in die verhaal is. Die einste owerheid wat geen geheim maak van die feit dat ons die doring in sy vlees is nie. Dat hy besig is om ons te boelie as gevolg van sy eie verdraaide opvatting van die verlede en ons nou soos die padda in die pot sal kook.

Ons is wel bewus van die boelie se bedoelings en sy doen en late, maar ons is nog te bang om hom te konfronteer en terug te veg. Ons het dalk nog te veel om te verloor, of dalk weeg ons behoefte aan orde nog swaarder as ons instinktiewe wil om op te staan teen ongeregtigheid.

Protes en rebellie loop hand-aan-hand en ons weet dat ons ‘n geweldige opoffering sal moet maak om dit wat verkeerd is reg te stel. Die onrustige prentjie van wat die korttermyn opofferings als behels oorskadu nog die langtermyn voordele wat vryheid inhou.   

Weet egter dit – die dag gaan kom wat ons niks gaan oorhê om te verloor nie. Ons verbrokkelende gemak en welvaart is direk afhanklik van ‘n stelsel wat gefundeer is in die vrye mark, vryheid van spraak, ‘n onafhanklike regbank en privaateiendomsreg. ‘n Stelsel wat tans besig is om voor ons oë te verbrokkel as ‘n direkte gevolg van die owerheid se wanbestuur, korrupsie en ideologie.

Daar is net een logiese gevolgtrekking wat gemaak kan word en soveel van ons steek eerder ons koppe in die sand as om die boelie reguit in sy oë te staar en vir hom te sê: “Tot hier toe en nie verder nie”.

Owerhede kom en gaan, maar volke bly staan. Ons leef in ‘n tyd wat ‘n owerheid, behep met ras, uitgesproke en onbeskaamd dislojaal teen ons volk optree. ‘n Korrupte owerheid wat in wese as ‘n versetbeweging teen ons volk gebore is en wat later nie geskroom het om onskuldige Afrikanerbloed te giet in sy stryd om mag te bekom nie. ‘n Vyandige owerheid wat astrant in dislojale verset teen jou, die leser, jou familie en jou vriende staan suiwer omdat julle Afrikaners is.

Ons moet verstaan dat ons meer mag het as wat ons dink. Sodra ons dit begin gebruik sal die geslagte wat volg na ons kyk en weet dat ons ook ‘n wêreldwye pandemie oorleef het, ‘n ekonomiese ineenstorting oorkom het, ons vyande uitoorlê het en vir die nageslag ‘n ryker kultuur en dieper geskiedenis nagelaat het.

Soos ons voorouers opgestaan het vir vryheid en geregtigheid sodat hul nageslag, synde ons, ‘n plek in die son mag hê, so ook moet ons die huidige verset teen ons bejeën met die minagting wat dit verdien en nog meer doelgerig voortgaan om ons plek in Afrika uit te kerf.

Kom wat wil. Tot hier toe en nie verder nie.
