31 Mei is ’n datum wat gereeld opduik in die Suid-Afrikaanse geskiedenis. Onder die Nasionale Party se bewind was 31 Mei as ’n vakansiedag herdenk as die amptelike datum van die Republiekwording van 1961. Republiekwording het daartoe gelei dat Suid-Afrika ’n staatspresident gekry het en nie meer die Britse koningshuis as hoogste gesag oor die land gehad het nie.

31 Mei 1910 is ook ’n belangrike datum. Dit is die dag waarop die Unie van Suid-Afrika tot stand gekom het. Die Unie sou die Republiek voorafgaan en was die amptelike samevoeging van die Kaap, Transvaal, Natal en die Oranje Vrystaat. Die datum wat egter vandag steeds in Orania herdenk word, hou verband met ’n gebeurtenis wat bovermelde datums lank vooruitgaan: die ondertekening van die Vrede van Vereniging op 31 Mei 1902.

Die onafhanklike skrywer en historikus dr Louis Bothma sê 31 Mei is ’n datum wat inderdaad gevier behoort te word. “Suid-Afrika het op 31 Mei 1961 ’n onafhanklike staat geword en is dit nog steeds. Terwyl Suid-Afrika se onafhanklikheids-wording egter nie meer onder die ANC-bewind gevier word nie, maar eerder Vryheidsdag op 27 April, vier Oraniërs elke jaar op 31 Mei Bittereinderdag. Dit was die dag in 1902 waarop die Boererepublieke deur Brittanje ongedaan gemaak, die Boere hul vryheid verloor en wit en swart mense almal Britse onderdane geword het. Op 31 Mei 1910 is hulle in ’n staatkundige eenheid onder die naam Unie van Suid-Afrika saamgevoeg. Nie alle bittereinders het egter, soos generaals Louis Botha en Jan Smuts, hierby berus nie. Toe oorlog in 1914 tussen Brittanje en Duitsland uitbreek, het die groep bittereinders wat eintlik die stryd in 1902 wou voortsit, in opstand gekom en probeer om hul vryheid met die wapen terug te wen. Hoewel hul poging, gelei deur generaals De Wet en Beyers, jammerlik misluk het, en die rebelle in die tronk gegooi is, het hierdie “ware bittereinders” nie gaan lê nie. Hulle het naamlik die Nasionale Party (wat in 1914 gestig is) as voertuig gebruik om hul republikeinse vryheidsideaal te verwesentlik. Dit is op 31 Mei 1961 gerealiseer toe die Republiek van Suid-Afrika tot stand kom en behou steeds hierdie naam as staat.
